New Unity is a non-profit organization that is tax-exempt under Rule 527 of the IRS Code. 527 organizations may not advocate for the election or defeat of a specific candidate for elective office or coordinate with the campaigns of such candidates but may be involved in issue advocacy
There are no upper limits on contributions to New Unity per Rule 527 and no restrictions on who may contribute. There are no spending limits imposed on 527 organizations. The organizations must register with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), publicly disclose their donors and file periodic reports of contributions and expenditures.
Contributions or gifts to a 527 organization, such as New Unity, are not tax deductible by the donor as charitable contributions. New Unity will not have to pay tax on funds it receives so long as it uses those funds for an exempt purpose, such as issue advocacy.
