We are non-partisan but we do not advocate for the elimination of parties. Parties have a useful purpose in organizing people with particular viewpoints. When such organizing becomes divisive, polarizing and dysfunctional - that is when the country needs an organization like New Unity.
We advocate for the establishment of a third chamber of Congress (we call it the Citizens Unity Assembly) composed of ordinary citizens who are chosen to reflect the will of the people. Until the Citizens Unity Assembly is established as an official government body by appropriate legal measure, which may require a constitutional amendment, we ask that the President commit to veto any legislation that a 55% super-majority of the Unity Assembly votes against. This Assembly is important because it will be composed of average people - not politicians or political partisans. This is direct democracy at its best. The Delegates will serve one year, and ten percent will serve for one additional year. Delegates must be at least 18 years old.
Initially it is an unpaid position - a voluntary service to the US. At some point, we hope it will be a paid position. The Citizens Unity Assembly will have the same committee structure as the House of Representatives with minor exceptions.
AGENDA OF THE ASSEMBLY
Agenda for debate and vote is set as follows:
New Unity is an advocate for views held by independent voters. We want to mitigate the polarizing influence of the two political parties. We plan to establish structures that empower independents. Interact with established political policies to raise awareness of issues important to independent voters.
Informed citizenry is essential to a functioning democracy. Unfortunately the US education system has not risen to the task. Compounding the problem is media's failure to deliver unbiased information. In the age of "click-bait" and polarized politics -- media has abused its first amendment privilege and is largely unaccountable.
New Unity advocates for better education and for higher media standards and accountability.
People need to debate issues in a reasonable and civil form We hope Americans will be inspired by the debate in The Citizens Unity Assembly.
New Unity is making constructive contributions to advance the interests of all Americans.
